Ska Control

The album opens with a man besieged by his own front door, where a landlord, two men talking loans, a preacher, and an officer certain he owns a stolen car all arrive before the tea goes cold. That pressure returns in new costumes across the record: one drink that becomes a lost weekend, a neighbor's wife who borrows salt she never returns, and a policeman who keeps finding the same face on every poster. Underneath runs a plainer grievance—some men are born on satin sheets while others stand barefoot on concrete. What keeps the record from turning sour is a code its characters never abandon: dress sharp, stay peaceful, answer trouble with footwork instead of fists. Upstroke guitar, walking bass, and barking trumpet carry that from Trenchtown to Brixton, in an album loose enough to let a three-foot bird stroll into the dancehall and be offered rum. It closes with the same song twice, live and then studio, removing the last excuse for staying seated. Ska Control catalogs everything that can go wrong in a week, then decides none of it is worth missing a dance over.
